Wikipedia joins January 18 SOPA/PIPA protest

Wikipedia joins January 18 SOPA/PIPA protest
With all the reports of many measures in SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act) being opposed publicly by a growing number of Washington politicians, you may have gotten the impression its opponents have won.

Many opponents aren't convinced, including Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales. Today he announced, via Twitter, that Wikipedia intends to replace all English language Wikipedia pages with information about SOPA and it's companion bill in the US Senate known as PIPA or PROTECT IP.

He said the blackout will affect all users worldwide who attempt to view any English language Wikipedia page during a 24 hour period starting at midnight Washington DC time (5 AM GMT). The exact contents of they page to be used in place of the requested content is still being determined via discussion on Wikipedia.

Whatever the specifics, he said his goal is to "melt phone systems in Washington on Wednesday."

Answering a number of questions about the blackout, Wales made it clear he still considers both SOPA and PIPA to be a real threat. At one point he responded to a claim SOPA had already been defeated with a tweet saying, "Rumors of the death of SOPA may be premature. But Senate version going strong."

January 18 is the same day Reddit will be going dark in protest of SOPA and PIPA. However, Reddit's protest is only scheduled to last 12 hours. Other websites already planning similar protests on that day include include Tucows, BoingBoing, and the entire Cheezburger Network.

A website dedicated to the blackout, set up by Fight The Future, also lists Mozilla, XDA-Developers, WordPress, and many others as confirmed participants.

Google, including YouTube, should do some sort of blackout even if it is more of a notification on every single page with something like this:

"This site could be forcefully taken down if SOPA/PIPA is passed. Call and/or write your Congress Representatives today to show that you want them to vote NO on SOPA/PIPA. Select what State you live in to see your Congress Representative's number and address."

It isn't dead...the president promised to Veto it; and he hasn't kept his word once. It isn't enough to stop this bill; the people who introduced and backed it need to face criminal charges as a lesson to those who would attempt it next time.

I did my part by writing my congressman and senate rep.
People shouldn't just bitch about SOPA and PIPA. Folks need to be more proactive. State you will not vote to re-elect them if they support communist governments POV like China.

Other people who work for him listed some things any anti-piracy bill "must do," nowhere does it say he won't sign a bill if it doesn't meet those requirements. It does however say we need some sort of anti-piracy legislation before the end of the year and also suggests "all parties cooperate" on a solution besides this new law.

The biggest problem with all this, of course, is that it's never been established that there's a need for anti-piracy legislation. In order to show such a law would do anything besides punishing people, you would first need to prove people have money to spend on entertainment that they are currently hiding in a mattress, making paper airplanes, or putting in a pile and burning. Then you would have to show the reason those imaginary people aren't spending that money on movies, music, etc,... is because of piracy (that's actually the wrong term since piracy specifically deals with a commercial operation). Since the first one isn't true, the whole thing fails.

As to the second point, we already know what you get when companies cooperate with the RIAA and MPAA. Those two groups make exactly no concessions, and the other party and their customers get screwed. But of course, since Joe Biden is a close ally of the copyright lobby, and generally acknowledged to be in charge of administration IP policy, that's not a problem for the White House.

You do know some news sites are having a big laugh over this, as they say who cares if wiki does go dark, people will just look up other places.

Just as I predicted that ATT/Tmobile merger wouldn't happen, I predict this too won't.

SOPA is too broad and now too opposed. Not gonna happen. If this were to be approved, tens of thousands of sites would shutdown or be swept under the rug. Any with a link pointing anywhere that SOMEONE ELSE deems "illicit" (arbitrarily I might add) will be closed and/or condemned. America won't allow this. Maybe 8 years ago but not now.
