Court: British ISPs must block The Pirate Bay

Court: British ISPs must block The Pirate Bay
The High Court has ruled today that UK ISPs must block The Pirate Bay.

Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media most now block all access to the Swedish file sharing site. The BPI praised the move, as expected: "Sites like The Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists."

BT, the last ISP in the region, said it needs a "few more weeks" to consider their position on blocking the torrent tracker.

Adds the BPI CEO Geoff Taylor: "The High Court has confirmed that The Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale. Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them. This is wrong - musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else."

Following a court order last year in which the ISPs were told to block newsgroup provider Newzbin 2, the BPI asked the ISPs to voluntarily block The Pirate Bay, as well. They did not agree unless there was a court order.

Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, called the move dangerous, as I'm sure many others feel the same way: "It will fuel calls for further, wider and even more drastic calls for internet censorship of many kinds, from pornography to extremism Internet censorship is growing in scope and becoming easier. Yet it never has the effect desired. It simply turns criminals into heroes."

    LOL!
It is the British welfare system, like America's, is utterly destroying jobs!
Continuous "entitlements" create a dependency not unlike slavery. No government in history has every survived on a fiat currency.

You are in the wrong place for that topic.

People who don't want to pay will always find a way around it.
Copying vcrs movies and dubbing tapes in teh 80's. Copying and burning DVD's in the 90's And now its the Mp3 and Divx era. For the legal people Piracy has only helped to improve their entertainment life. The problem that the Movie and music industry is having. They can no longer sell the crap product as easily now as they used too. Communication between viewers and listeners of the same product online isn't very hard to find. Not like it was 30 years ago. Its easier to know if you are getting a crap product or not.

There are better &faster private torrent sites out there. This will do nothing to fix the problem. Do you want google blocked as well so people cannot find new torrents??

As I understand things (from Heather Brooke's book "The Revolution Will Be Digitised") the Pirate Bay's servers are in Sweden and the website is registered as a company in Sweden, and Swedish law applies. The law over copyright in Sweden is more lax than in other countries and the operation of the Pirate Bay is quite legitimate in Sweden.

If there is any attempt to restrict my access to the Pirate Bay (I am in the UK) this is tantamount to censoring my access to the internet. As far as I am aware, torrents have not in themselves be judged to be illegal in the UK, so downloading my latest Linux distro by torrent will still be legal, but downloading it from the Pirate Bay will not be. If the ruling is that ISPs in the UK should block all of the IP addresses that the Pirate Bay uses, this ruling could prove expensive, difficult to implement, and drive more users to access the internet through servers in Sweden. This would LESSEN income in the UK and defeat the object of the legal ruling.

I suspect this legal ruling will be subject to legal appeals and not be the end of the matter.

Why does the movie and music industry always claim piracy causes job losses. I think the money people save from getting free movies and music is spent on essential products and goods, thus creating jobs.
