Wii U specs finally official
Nintendo has finally confirmed the specs inside the upcoming Wii U.

After a year of speculation, here is the full rundown, via the gaming giant:

Size
Approximately 1.8 inches high, 10.5 inches deep and 6.8 inches long.

Appearance
The new console features a compact design that will make it a natural addition to any home entertainment setup.

Weight
Approximately 3.41 pounds (1.5 kg).

CPU
IBM PowerⓇ-based multi-core processor.

GPU
AMD Radeon-based High Definition GPU.

Storage
Wii U uses an internal flash memory. It also supports SD memory cards and external USB storage.

Wii U and Wii optical discs.

Networking
Wii U can access the Internet via wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) connection. The console features four USB 2.0 connectors - two in the front and two in the rear - that support Wii LAN Adapters.

Wii Compatibility
Nearly all Wii software and accessories can be used with Wii U.

Audio Output
Uses six-channel PCM linear output via HDMI connector, or analog output via the AV Multi Out connector.

Wii U GamePad
The Wii U GamePad controller removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. It incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen, as well as traditional button controls and two analog sticks. Inputs include a +Control Pad, L/R sticks, L/R stick buttons, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons, ZL/ZR buttons, Power button, HOME button, -/SELECT button, +/START button, and TV CONTROL button. The GamePad also includes motion control (powered by an accelerometer, gyroscope and geomagnetic sensor), a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, rumble features, a sensor bar, an included stylus and support for Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality. It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and weighs approximately 1.1 pounds (500 g).

Other Controllers
The Wii U console is capable of supporting two Wii U GamePad controllers, up to four Wii Remote (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers or Wii U Pro Controllers, and Wii accessories such as the Nunchuk, Classic Controller and Wii Balance Board.

Video Output
Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, Wii D-Terminal, Wii Component Video, Wii RGB, Wii S-Video Stereo AV and Wii AV.

Wii U Features
In addition to introducing new ways to play, Wii U also offers users a variety of non-gaming features to enhance the overall experience.

Miiverse
Miiverse is a brand-new network communication system that lets gamers from around the world share experiences, discuss games and discover new content. Using their personalized Mii character, players enter Miiverse and see games, applications or entertainment content that either they have interacted with recently, expressed interest in learning more about or that their friends are using or discussing. From here they can challenge their friends to play together, ask a question about a difficult level or discover new elements of their favorite games they never knew existed. After a notable achievement or other share-worthy moment, players can pause their game or application and seamlessly post messages to the Miiverse community.

TV Remote: The Wii U GamePad controller may also function as an infrared TV remote, whether users are watching TV or playing a game.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

The Wii U GamePad has the ability to communicate wirelessly with objects that are held above it. This allows for a variety of interesting new possibilities for games and activities.

Nintendo eShop: The digital storefront for Wii U will be available at launch and offer a variety of content for people to download and enjoy. Consumers will also be able to purchase and download select games that are also available at retail stores.

Video Entertainment
Nintendo is working with Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube to bring video experiences to Wii U that will take advantage of the integrated second-screen experience. Additional details will be released at a later time.

Video Chat
Using the built-in camera of the Wii U GamePad, people can communicate with other Wii U owners in real time.

Internet Browser
Wii U comes with a browser that lets people with a wireless Internet connection surf the Internet from the comfort of their couches.

These are good specs that are affordable unlike the PS3 at launch. The PS3 was ahead of XBox and look where that got them (I waited until the price hit $250) and now look at the Vita. Seriously if you want high end graphics then PC is where it's at. As long as consoles has fun software at it's disposal then they have nothing to worry about.

As such, there's really no unbiased way to compare its performance with that of competitors' machines yet.

I agree pc is where you get good graphics (and controlles)...but you kinda missed the point of what he was saying. This thing is coming out with specs that don't appear to be much better than Microsoft and sony, at about the same price, with fewer hd games available, and with a smaller user base. If someone want a cheap system they can already get it, and with better controllers.

We will have to see the actual specs...it might be better than the ps3 in processing power, with more ram. That would actually fit their tradition well...the Wii was only slightly better than the ps2 in such areas, and it sold very well. Of course, the Wii had a really good store display and was optimized for little kids, not sure you can say that about a system with a screen in the middle of an extremely heavy gamepad, with video chat capabilities that many parents would not want their kids to have.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure who they are going after with this one...certainly not hardcore gamers, not kids, not the elderly, and not casual gamers either. The only people I can think of would be the army of hackers that will just buy the controller for various projects...assuming the price is right.

What happened to the Bluray drive?

Their audience are the Nintendo fanboys (myself included) that want to play the latest and greatest of their franchises using the new widget.

They also seem to be headed in the entertainment direction as well, something MS and Sony have had their eye on conquering forever. (For me MS dropped the ball because I won't pay for Live just to get on ESPN3 when my Xbox collects dust.)

Quibbling over hardware is kind of dumb too. Nintendo is giving a reason for you to purchase a console versus taking that money and sticking with PC gaming. They're thinking ahead and trying to make something innovative and unique while not charging $1000 for it.

Would it kill them to at least make the damn thing play DVD's????

I wouldn't waste my time on the last one because as a game machine it's use is limited. But if the Wii had played DVD's it would have been far more valuable and useful to me.

Come on KillerBug read my statement again. I completely understand what he was saying. It's like what Reggie said about Nintendo, they don't want the specs to be to high where the average consumer cannot afford the system (prime example is the PS3) so of course the power of the systems won't be leaps and bounds over the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Their approach is to hit HD but to offer a different experience with the gamepad.

I'm a huge fan of my PS3 I'm playing Borderlands Game of the Year, Infamous 2, and Mass Effect 3. But the fact is I never would have gotten a system if it wasn't for the price drop, just don't have that kind of dough. When Sony comes out with the PS4 and it's over $350, then I won't be buying one anytime soon, which history has told us that a lot of people are in the same boat as me. And don't knock the gamepad until you try it first and the those who actually played with it have confirmed it's pretty light on the hands.

I love how the article's title states that the specs are released and then the article itself say a lot of nothing. Did they have Chevy Chase do the press conference like this...

They've only given Japan pricing so far (30,000 Yen). There's not a direct currency conversion, though, as that would be just under US$300, but that's about the same price Sony sells the 320GB PS3 for in Japan, but that's US$350, so US$299.99-349.99 would seem to be the price range (and that MAY not include the GamePad controller).

The rumors I heard at the E3 show floor was $350 to $400. The conversion for 30000 yen to US is around $377. We'll see if the real specs and US pricing will be revealed at Nintendo's next show.
