Wii U to cost $250?

Wii U to cost $250?
Although it has of course remained unconfirmed by Nintendo, there is now some decently strong evidence that the upcoming Wii U will cost $249 at launch.

Wholesale media distribution company VPD has let it slip that the Wii U will make its American and Canadian debut on November 11th, starting with a base price of $249.99.

Additional SKUs will price at $300 and $350, although it is unclear what comes in each bundle.

VPD accidentally posted and then quickly removed the product pages with the information.

Nintendo will unveil more about the console, including release date, on September 13th during an event in NYC.

Who cares about some current-gen console released with the next@vgen consoles and with no library of games? What I want to know is how much the controller costs, and how easy it is to hack.

What Nintendo should do is release the Wii U controller as a separate entity (like the Sony Move and Microsoft Kinect). That way, the millions of people who already own a Wii wont have to buy a completely new console just to get a few extra features.

You do realize that the Wii is nowhere near capable of functioning with the gamepad like the Wii U does right. That would be the worst thing to do when Nintendo is trying to gain the trust of third party support by offering better hardware. This last part is not direct at you but, haters goin' to hate.

Who would even want GameCube support???
Old console which can be bought dirt cheap now!
It's like sayin u wouldn't buy a ps3 if it wouldn't play old ps1 games, the old games never seem as good as they did "back in the day"!

    Way to miss the point.....

Er I and any other GC owner. It's something called added value and helps keep the dust away when there is a game drought. Something the 360 and Vita have not learned. Also helps with clutter.

The Wii is not even able to produce HD, the Wii U will be able to do so. Along with that it will have a better CPU & GPU (obviously) this is not a Wii packaged with a tablet controller. The Wii U tablet I doubt will do very much of anything but be a streaming device. That means the console is doing all the work and the tablet is basically a small portable touch screen TV.

Who would want Wii support other than people who already have one? The games are terrible and the controls are worse. It is marketed to kids who like flailing their arms around until the WiiMote flies at the TV, and to old people who settle for virtual bowling because the crummy old folks home won't let them leave.

As for the Wii U...$250 for a system that is marginally better (technically) than the PS3/360...but with no library of games other than the old games that you yourself say no one would want. Sure, it will might have a short time in the sun as developers release the same games for the PS3, 360, and WiiU...but once they start developing for the XboX8 and the PS4, you can forget all that and look forward to the system living on Mario and Zelda. Almost a shame too...about the only good official use for that controller other than NetFlix would be with RPG games, and those are going to be on the other three platforms. As for unoffical uses, that might be a bit more interesting if the controller is cheap...controls for a robot or UAV with built-in display for under $80 would be very popular over at [HAD].

Sometimes you make good compelling statements that I agree with, and then there are times where you just go on a rant. The controls for each game on the Wii depended on the developers, if you half-assed it, then you half-assed it. There were plenty of games on the Wii where the controls were grand, with Resident Evil 4 being an example. The whole "nintendo for kids" is old, and has been left behind years ago, there are adults who enjoy their Nintendo systems. Oh, and Lots of people play their old game, this is commonsense, if this is not the case then you weren't have Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo releasing remakes or putting old games in their online stores.

Wii U has a library of games, just because they don't cater to "you" does not mean they don't have a lineup. I'm looking forward to ZombiU, P-100, Pikmin 3, and that's all I need for now since that's what I can only afford at the moment.

Here you are praising about systems that haven't even been mentioned by there respective companies, let alone know the specs for it, and you keep going on in on. Anyhow, if Nintendo could sell this thing at $250 then I will be happy, I wouldn't have to wait a few years for it to go down price for me to buy. I have to wait for September 13 to actually find out about the price.

Ya, but a lot people want to reduce clutter, so Id want GC support. The way the new Nintendo console is now means people would either have to have both Wii/GC along side the Wii U to have the ability to play those GC games. Also people like the idea of a console playing retro games that forever shine in gaming history. Say Id like to play Ikaruga on a Wii U thats a bonus, cause I dont want to have to pull out a extra system.

I'm not praising the new consoles; in fact I doubt they will be all they are cracked up to be. However, I do know they will have so much more capabilities that the current-gen systems that the games will not be cross-generation for very long if at all...and the WiiU is not much better than the current generation.

Yeah, I know lots of people play their old games...I was responding to someone who said that no one plays the old games so no GC support was needed, but then said that the WiiU would have lots of games because it plays the old games from the Wii...it can't be both. Me, I tried playing the old games...I can't go back. Heck, at this point playing PS3 games is downright painful even when the game was ported from the PS3 to the PC the graphics (and even the gameplay in many cases) are so much better that it ruins any immersion on the console. Ever try picking someone off with a sniper rifle from 1000 yards in Fallout or GTA on the PS3? Yeah...they actually exist on the PC. So now Nintendo is joining the current-gen console war about 6 years late...and I'm not expecting much. I don't see who would buy one when the 360 or the PS3 will be the same price and less with a huge library of games, and with comfortable controllers (I don't need to feel the WiiU controller to know it is not comfortable). I see parents buying it because it is from Nintendo and Nintendo is kid friendly...I see kids asking for it because they are not tired of Mario and Zelda yet (and because they know they are not getting Fallout, GTA, etc any time soon), and I see old people wanting it because virtual bowling will look better. Oh, and I see slightly overweight middle-aged housewives buying it for the workout games, only to end up giving it to the kids like they did with the Wii. As for "adults" I'm sure the people with every system will get one for the exclusives, and I'm sure there will be a devoted community of hackers trying to make the thing better...but I just don't see gamers blowing $250 on a system that isn't much better than what they already have, not when they are saving their money for the next-gen.

I agree with most of your points. I am building my first PC rig for Gaming and Video Editing since Adobe Premiere is a memory hog and my laptop can barely handle it. You have to be pretty ignorant to believe that consoles will match PC (and if they did the prices will be through the roof), and I'll be getting Skyrim for my PC instead of getting it for the PS3.

However, the fact of the matter is and history has told us this, that consoles sales more than PC when it comes to gaming, hence why Microsoft of all companies would jump on the console bandwagon.

Now as far as Nintendo is concern, they made high end consoles before the Wii, it seems they are a lot of people who choose to forget that. They made profit off the GameCube but it was not up to standards as far as total sales when you compare it to the PS2, they did not want to go the way of the Sega. They lost third party developers due to high restrictions imposed by the President of Nintendo before Iwata and paid dearly for, which is why Nintendo is trying to rectify that with the Wii U along with offering new ways to play which have been their motto for a long time now.

Nintendo may not have Fallout of GTA at the moment even though it's as of yet to be confirmed, they still have Platinum Games, Bioware, Ubisoft, Gearbox, and others that have announced their games for the system so that is looking pretty good so far, it does not matter whether the games have been released or not, the fact that their are being released on the Wii U is the matter at hand..

The PS3 was released so what a year to two years after the Xbox, which was deemed far more powerful than the Xbox, but yet Xbox still leads in sales ahead of the PS3 in the states. So that should tell you something let alone what the original price was for the system at the time. Look at the 3DS and the Vita, I can go on and on.

Anyhow, it's all about preference at the end of the day, I have friends who just play PC, or just own a Xbox, as for me, I have own most systems besides an Xbox, and it will be the same for this generation with the PC included. Game on.

In terms of raw processing power, the PS3 is much more powerful. If you want to use OtherOS to calculate your nuclear arms or to fold your proteins it is great. However, the GPU is only marginally faster, and the total memory is the same. If not for the bluray drive, I would think it had been designed for nothing but folding. The difference for gaming (what people usually buy consoles for) is marginal...in fact, the memory setup on the 360 makes it a better system in some ways.

Note that I am not saying the WiiU won't sell well...I'm reasonably sure it will, but not to hardcore gamers. Hardcore gamers already have a current-gen system, some have both, and some of those will buy the WiiU to put next to their Atari Jaguar on their shelf of "every system ever made". If you don't believe that, just scroll to the top of this page and look at the controller. Try to imagine holding that controller for 4 hours at a time. Heck, try to imagine playing some of the new games at all. Sure, it has a stylus (useless for gaming), but are the triggers analog in use (as opposed to analog like on the face of a DS3)?

The Ps3 is more powerful than the 360 but is nearly halved in potential due to it being a pain in the ass to code.

Its all about ease of use thus why the 360 has more games. A shame about the GUI tho...and bing a catch all for search? the fck?

MS.... why you make things suck more? ><

The whole difficulty of coding thing is a bit overrated...games get ported over all the time, so it isn't like there is a huge difference. Porting a game built for the PS3 to the 360 might be hard, but going from 3 cores to 6 (of the same core type) isn't. The PS3 dev kits are more expensive, but that really only hurts tiny devs that make those $5 XBL games anyway. The only other difficulties in programming for the PS3 are the extra cores (they don't actually need to be used, and often are not...but to actually program for them is a little trickier) and the split memory...something that is harder to program for but not exactly uncommon (PC has been using this since DOS).

Oh...as for bing, would you expect microsoft to allow users to use Google when google is their competition in so many fields?

Looking at the outcome via AAA and exclusive titles and the tech specs of the hardware its not overrated, at least not for the PS3.

And they do not need bing just an easy to use GUI to find games and films on LIVE akin to what ps3/PSN uses.

    .......................................

Who would want Wii support other than people who already have one? The games are terrible and the controls are worse.

It is marketed to kids who like flailing their arms around until the WiiMote flies at the TV, and to old people who settle for virtual bowling because the crummy old folks home won't let them leave.

Way to sneer at the best selling console this gen.
Shame the almost 100million who bought one don't seem to agree.

Like it or not the Wii opened up a whole new video gaming market (which PC game makers, MS, Sony & various devs can now try & exploit & profit from.....something which anyone who claims to care about gaming ought to applaud, even if those sorts of games do not appeal).

Wii U offers a lot for those ciming from GC or Wii mk1.
It'll be interesting to see how many of them stay loyal to Nintendo.

    ....oh and "no games"!?
    Be serious.
Nintendo games have a habit of generating a loyalty few others match (and I'm saying this as someone who never got bitten by the Zelda etc etc bugs.....I know a stack of people who did).

As for BC generally, I can see no good reason why it isn't standard on every console.

A shame the only games the WII has is Nintendos and overly easy or out od date, the rest are either made of fail, extremely rare or a washed down clone of whats on the PS360...the WII is a shadow of what the Cube was sadly...

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

Yeah but Zippy the thing is, Wii meant a lot of parents could suddenly play games & enjoy them with their kids.
I have seen this myself countless times......and almost 100 million sales says I am far from alone in this.

    "only Nintendo games"?
I thnk most dev would give their eye-teeth for titles (and sales) that the Nintendo classics generate.Seeing as they also have a ton of 3rd paty games to offer too they can hardly be said to lack games.
Add in the Wii U will be offering games at the current stadard (or a little better) and I don't see them having many issues there.

Those who want the laughably anal 'need to read a novel of instructions just to operate the damn thing' type game still have their PC's, PS3's & Xboxes (and I speak as someone with all of them - except a Wii).

Personally I think 'serious gaming' drove waaaaay to far up a blind alley of irrelevance to the majority.
I've been playing video games since the 1980's (loved my Commodore 64 & the number of hours spent on an Amiga isn't worth thinking about) but I am sorry to say I find a lot of what's being produced these days is just boring - not to mention absurdly over-priced (but this one applies to all of them).

The faintly ridiculously self-styled 'serious' or 'hardcore' gamers seem to hate the Wii for some reason.
Other than the ludicrous fanboy twerps whining that the object of their deepest devotion & affection lost out in sales to it I find this hard to understand as without it a lot of game studios would be having a much worse time in these difficult economic times.

That goes without saying I am merely an old jaded crusty gamer, I focus on gameplay to much :P
