Nintendo responds to Foxconn child labor admission

Earlier this week, following an investigation, Foxconn admitted to hiring underage interns, in breach of child labor laws.

In China, the legal working age is 16 but some of the interns were found to be as young as 14. While Foxconn did not admit it, some reports claimed the interns were working many hours including overtime.



Today, Nintendo has responded to the news, since their upcoming Wii U is built by Foxconn:

Nintendo is in communication with Foxconn and is investigating the matter. We take our responsibilities as a global company very seriously and are committed to an ethical policy on sourcing, manufacture and labor. In order to ensure the continued fulfillment of our social responsibility throughout our supply chain, we established the Nintendo CSR Procurement Guidelines in July 2008. We require that all production partners, including Foxconn, comply with these Guidelines, which are based on relevant laws, international standards and guidelines. If we were to find that any of our production partners did not meet our guidelines, we would require them to modify their practices according to Nintendo's policy.

  This is Nintendo's way of saying, we have found the cheapest way to manufacture our line, and although we may or may not have known they were not adhering to the law, we will of course allow them the chance to get away with it before we as a last measure pull out.
  
  To this I say I hope everyone enjoys their slave laboring devices they enjoy for so cheap.

  Asian 14yrs old kids help to made video games system so the Western 14yrs old can play video games all day at home and do nothing else. Life is good.

  Nintendo are trying to put on a good front for the media.Nintendo probably dont care what happes at foxconn as long as they get the consoles made at the cheapest possible price.

  As long as it is legal for a 16-year-old kid to work 20 hours a day for peanuts, that's fine...but 14 is not acceptable because it is not legal. Seems the logical thing to do would be to lower the working age to 10...no, make that 8...no...5...

  I dunno. Obviously Foxxcon is is in the wrong, but I feel like Nintendo is a respectable company, or at least their CEO is. I had no idea they still employed Foxxcon to produce their systems...wow.
  
  I understand that they might feel like they need it, since they will need to be ridiculously competitive in their pricing of the Wii U...but still. Child labor.

  Nintendo is also on the lower end of environmental responsibility ratings for electronics manufacturers.
