Sony announces PlayStation 4

Sony announces PlayStation 4
Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 4 console at an event in New York, confirming many previous rumors and leaks.

Andrew House, CEO and President of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), gave some hardware details for the upcoming console. It will use an x86 CPU as a nod to easier development for the console, and will pack 8GB of RAM.

It will include local storage - no information on how much just yet - and has a high performance graphics card with GDDR5 memory. The system allows you to simply Suspend it - mid-gameplay - and Resume it later. The state of your console will be stored in RAM, so you do not need to wait for the console to boot, and then load the game and load your save.. it will just continue from where it left off.

The new DualShock 4 controller has the Share button that we all already knew about, enhanced rumbling, a headphone jack and is tracked by a camera that is still in development. PlayStation Move will be supported on PS4.

Thanks to Gaikai, if you have a PSVita, you will be able to use it for Remote Play from the PS4, and eventually will be able to stream older PlayStation titles to the PS4 from the cloud.

The PlayStation 4 will allow you to play games as you download them, and has dedicated hardware that will handle game updates and other such annoyances in the background. The console makes it easy to connect directly with friends, building social networking right into the experience.

Friends can watch you play - or vice versa - through streaming video, and can even take over the controls.

The event hinted at a Holiday 2013 release, but nothing more specific, which strongly suggests that E3 will be the venue for release and price information. Sony probably wants to see as much of Microsoft's hand as it can before it decides on those details, while the rest of us watch the clock tick by in frustration.

Sadly - but predictably - we didn't see a PS4 tonight but with all the mentions of "running on prototype hardware", any tiny hope that we would was quickly diminished. Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, already fired one shot at Sony about the lack of hardware on Twitter..

Roll on E3 then!

They likely want to show PS4 at E3, why put all your thunder and hype in one basket?

If they would've showed all the goodies you wouldn't go to/or watch Sony's E3 booth.I'm thrilled they showed off games being played and some to come!!!

suspend and resume sounds alot like a save state feature on emulators.

i have the big screen tv,a ps3 and 5.1 channel surround sound.car still runs smooth and computer still works but its a bit outdated.

Will probably get one, but it apparently being basic PC hardware is a bit of a yawn. 8GB RAM is good for the masses of lazy developers who hate optimizing code, I guess.

Prices said to be around 430.00, wonder what the game prices will be?
Im sure that walmart will sell it and places like costco will offer extended warranties.

So the price of a unit with warranty and 1 game (perhaps dl) will run around 560-580.
Stout price but doable easily if people are saving now.

    Ahh the console wars renewed.

The last one was the reason I joined AD. Met some good people had some fun times. I was a firm Sony fanboy fighting the cause of the PS3 and ended up buying an Xbox (well really 2 like almost everyone else the 1st one RROD'd :p).

Point is that is what taught me that brand loyalty is irrelevant stick with what works for you at the time when you need it.

For example I have both iOS and android devices and I love them all because they serve the purpose that I bought them for.

As we enter this season of hotheadedness and fanboyism I implore you all to keep a level head cut out the fights and insults and just have civil discussion about this new console cycle. Lets keep AD nice and not give the MODs too much of a hard time for the next few month. After all its hardware we've never tough yet we really can only speculate about what either can really do.

Sooooooo........this is nothing more than a more "networked/networkable" and sharable PS3. Graphics and games are the same as now and the hardware is SLIGHTLY beefed up.

Well, that is sad...not that I was planning to get one, but I had hoped that the ps4 would have good specs so developers would feel more confident making advanced games. Well, at least it has some ram...so no one should feel afraid of making something like Skyrim or Fallout. Let's see how the xbox next looks.

They really did an about-face here, much more so than I thought they might. They must have felt really burned by the innovation experiment of the ps3 not working as well as they hoped. Sad, I could see what they were trying to do with the ps3 and it was a bold move but it must have been too tricky to program for and keep costs realistic. The end results weren't that much better (or perhaps even worse) if the game was cross-platform and/or didn't have piles of cash thrown at it. They could be but only if you had the resources of a big investor like Sony itself a-la the brilliant Drake's Uncharted series.

Maybe they should have called it the PS180. :D

I'll try... but ironically the OUYA will will only get any good if it gets popular!

The idea is to have a set piece of hardware that gets programmed specifically for and a large supportive community so its maximum potential is realised. (As opposed to the generalised cross-platforming nature of ordinary android games). You already realise all this I'll bet.

As to Steam and Linux... they already have their Piston Engine or Steam Box or God Nose based on the Xi3 in the works for that. So no to that probably... Onlive seems the go here.

    Cheers.

No i simply get tired of hearing and reading about people moaning about prices and functions and power, a bunch of yada yada about nothing.
If the system is out of someone's price range then they should not try to own it now. I promise that if the tag was 299, the internet would be on its ear with people clamoring to get one.
Another thing is that i dislike people's opinions based nearly on sony hate. So they are not making the next big thing, ok, simply do not purchase one and keep it moving. That is the way that i see it. I will buy one and if it isnt what i expect then ill take it back to costco or i will toss it on the shelf with the other systems that i have racked up over the past 27 years.

But, i sure as hell am not going to allow a sub 1000.00 price tag stop me from getting one.

    no worries :)

Well, it will be running XBMC and Plex. Unfortunately it doesn't have an optical or spdif out (I bought a seperate HDMI audio splitter for that to use with surround headphones). DVR would need a usb tv card I suppose... I don't intend to develop on it.

I agree, I have never been brand loyal (or a fanboy), I simply buy what I feel is the best available product, my console history goes ps1, xbox, ps3 (with a wii in there somewhere), and phone history is avid iphone fan (3gs then 4) and now galaxy s3.

That being said I am really looking forward to more info on ps4, but will still consider microsofts offering, I just hope they dont release a budget console which requires lot's of accessories which should be their 'as standard' like they did with the 360.

No, i built both of my businesses over a period of 16 years. I started creating businesses in 1995. Some failed and i pushed on. I have never been dirt poor but i have been to where i had to rely on sandwiches and milk for survival, barely with 3 change of clothing for the week.

What I get a kick out of is x86 32bit CPU instead of a x64? Seems to be sticking your feet in the cement instead of moving forward for today world to save a few dollars. However the video card is truly the more important hardware in your console so it is probably a nit really.

your 32 GB are ddr3 and the 8 GB in the ps4 are ddr5 and you 8 cores are not jaguar ( and since it is a custom version i believe that they will open up extra bandwidth between the two or three components of the ps4) so we will see how it plays out in the next few months and i hope they keep the cost down to 400 bucks but i assume that it will be closer to 500 at release time !

I've owned very few modern consoles. The Wii was a necessary buy. Won't go into that though :p I would easily spend $100 on a PC version of Gran Turismo. BELIEVE IT!!!

Or don't. I'll emulate it in a few decades when an emulator comes out :(

Star Trek High Definition is only possible while theyre receiving return for their efforts. Pirate Star Trek, and their efforts will have no choice but to cease :(

I hope the PS4 can beat this, though it is unlikely.
the ps4 will probably cost half or a 3rd of what your pc did.so to get an accurate accessment you would have to connect 2 or 3 ps4s together.

i have the big screen tv,a ps3 and 5.1 channel surround sound.car still runs smooth and computer still works but its a bit outdated.

He's (or she's) just a kid with a brand new PC using this opportunity to brag a bit. Cut him some slack. He'll learn.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Well duh! But in your usual self-serving way you spectacularly miss the point. Do you want a medal O great one? Why do I even ask... of course you do!

It's crazy, you give every indication money is seen by you as the ultimate qualifier of a person's worth but it's not enough is it? Not in reality. In reality you need friends but have yet to learn that real friends aren't sycophants.
