Toshiba shows off upcoming 4K notebook

Toshiba shows off upcoming 4K notebook
Toshiba has finally revealed the full spec sheet for its upcoming Satellite P50t notebook.

The company first unveiled the notebook, which features a 4K resolution display, at this year's CES event.

At the heart of the notebook is its 3,840 x 2,160, 15.6-inch touchscreen, powered by an Intel Core-i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, a 2GB AMD Radeon R9 M265 GPU, 4 USB 3.0 ports, an SD/SDHC slot, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac WiFi and pre-installed Windows 8.1.

Strangely, the device does not have a hybrid storage option, opting for a 1TB HDD. There is no optical disc drive, leading to a relatively light 4.8 pound frame.

Toshiba has not revealed a price nor a release date except to say it is coming in the Q2. With those specs, expect a price around $2000.

I couldn't care if it had the best of the best hardware money could buy. If it comes with anything higher than windows 7(even if it allowed you to downgrade), I am not buying it. Period!

When Toshiba make a "real" lap-top with those specs, I maybe will consider it.

LoL...4K screen for the latest blurays, which you cannot play because there is no drive.

I recently spent approx. the same amount on a new laptop. I got a lot more bang for my buck than this one-trick pony offers. (BD-ROM, 32GB RAM, 17' screen,GTX 780M etc...) What good is a 4k monitor on a 15' screen, anyway? Sheesh

I have a 14" touchscreen 4k laptop from Fujitsu. Its amazing. Though you do have to jave pretty good visiom as a lot of programs menus don't scale. Ultra high res on small screens is all about screen real-estate. Its like having a 30" 1080p screen with you on the go. Also they are incredibly beautiful and much closer to a truly "retina" ppi.

    Also:

    Apple only has 2560 x 1440.
Windows 7 doesn't do well with ultra high res.
Toshiba's high-end laptops have so e of the best quality in the industry.

I am impressed with the res for the Apple... but as to the rest I've not found that to be the case.... Toshy laptops have been absolute crap quality in my experience, high-end or not. I guess you could argue that's subjective but it seems to be the general consensus at AD ... again anecdotal I guess. But I'm not being malicious, I would not recommend a Toshy to anyone.

But problems with Win7 ultra-high res? Well, here it is 'not doing well' at 4096x3072 (4:3)

To be fair to you I did this g search on "win7 4k res resolution issues and problems"...

    ... and found nothing.

At the most there a couple of complaints about text sizes a few apps/progs interfaces... but this was not limited to Win7 and not blamed on the OSs. On the contrary I found people loving it. Not just gamers either. The desktop can be enlarged without problems... that actually accommodates UHD. So where do you get your info?

I currently have a toshiba laptop and don't have any complaints besides the ubiquitous initial bloatware. What's your problem with this brand?

I've just had to send too many back for clients. And repeatedly... There's always something wrong. They don't seem to last, I have a ton of dead ones out the back.

And don't get me started on the hard drives.

Toshy used to be a great brand, reliable, I don't know what happened...

But if your having a good time with yours then ok... I would consider you lucky. I guess I would at least insist that someone look around at what the other brands are offering before buying a Toshy lappy. Even Acer has picked up it's game in contrast.

First I've never in my entire life heard of complaints about Toshiba's product quality on the high end. Though like you said niether of us have stats, but at least I'm going of anecdotal evidence of owning over a dozen toshiba laptops. Considering they had some of the first high end laptops to market in the Libretto line. Many of which still work today. The Qosmio series of gaming laptops were also very reliable. The only laptops I'll buy are Toshiba or Fujitsu.

Second, you answered your own question about Windows 7 having issues with ultra high res. Text size and UI not scaling especially in browsers. Ultra high res didn't exist when Windows 7 launched. Again I have an ultra high res with Win 7 and one with Win 8. I'm so done with reading and commenting on afterdawn. Fucking trolls.

    On topic:
I don't have a beef with Toshiba laptops (not too keen on this one, though) but the last one I had, a Qosmio 18.4 inch monster, made it through two tours in Iraq, and one in Afghanistan. It only recently gave up the ghost (most likely caused by severe jarring and dust storms). Never had a laptop last that long.

And BTW.....these are "discussion boards" for the most part BUT......I am truly excited you're done here. AD will truly be a more harmonious and happy place without your feedback.

High-end Toshiba laptops have always been a bit sad in my experience...but their low-end stuff is pretty good if you have some basic computer skills. Sure, they come loaded with bloatware and the keyboards are a bit too flexible for me, but clean them up and they work great for years and years, while costing less than HP, Dell, ETC with the same specs that only last 2-3 years. My current Toshiba laptop was the cheapest 17" in the store by almost $100. It's been running perfect in a super-high vibration/dust/humidity/impact environment for almost 2 years. The battery life hasn't even decreased. My only issue so far was that one of the keys exploded after a metal plate fell 8 feet onto the keyboard...got a new key and it's good as new other than where acid ate some of the finish off. The last toshiba was still working great after nearly 4 years (even the battery)...only replaced it because I wanted more power and a bigger screen; the only thing I had to do to that one was to replace the hard drive after I dropped it off a truck. The one before that only lasted 3 years sadly; it was a "tough book" but it wasn't tough enough to survive being run over by a truck with tire chains.
