IMAX, Carnival announce first theater on a ship

IMAX and massive cruise line operator Carnival have unveiled the "world's first IMAX Theatre on a ship."

The theater will be part of Carnival's new monster ship, the Carnival Vista. The ship will be ready to sail in March 2016, and is the largest in the fleet.



Both companies say the the ship features an "IMAX screen three decks high, providing guests with the most immersive cinematic experience. Guest will be able to take in the latest Hollywood blockbusters and IMAX documentaries."

  I-Max has adopted digital projection, using 2 projectors for light output. They have bet the store on the ( coming soon) laser illuminated digital projectors. In earlier years, Todd-AO 70mm was used on some European cruise ships.
  
  The old I-Max used 70mm film 15 perforations wide, like VistaVision, the image goes sideways through the projector and camera.
  
  There is no digital projection system in use that can equal a 70mm film print. Today, in the industry, we lovingly call digital I-Max, Lie-Max.
  
  A 4k digital image is barely equal to 35mm and lacks 1/3 the resolution of anamorphic ( CinemaScope) film...most digital theaters are 2K.
  
  When FotoKem works on large format restoration they scan at 8K and work from there, down converting as format requires.
