Xperia Play buyers will have to re-purchase PSX games
Sony Ericsson has said today that future purchasers of the Xperia Play Android gaming phone will have to repurchase all of their classic PSX downloadable games, regardless of when you bought them.

Most of the games available for the Xperia Play will be developed exclusively for the platform, but there are a number of direct PSX ports that will be available, as well.

You will not be able to just re-download those already purchased games, you will have to re-buy them.

Says Sony Ericsson UK managing director Nathan Vautier (via TG):

You will have to re-purchase the games, so it's not totally integrated. I think the exciting thing is that there are games which people are very, very aware of.

The Xperia Play will launch next month with 50 downloadable games available and only a few being direct ports that were available on the PSP/PS3 before.

This is great news...now every hacker on earth is going to be attacking the thing on launch day and we will see a jailbreak in no time. Thanks Sony! Your tireless encouragement of Jailbreakers is worthy of a reward.

Sony will sue again just like PS3 hackers and I'm sure the same hackers will jailbreak this as well

I'm really curious to see which carrier this will come put for, and if they will take issue with people hacking it, since it is sony's device.

So they will force me to hack the device so I can get my PSN purchased PSX games to work? Will do.

Except this time in US, its legal to jailbreak your Phone lol F U SONY. Also they can't claim piracy if you own the games you hacked onto the phone on PSN anyway, whether the game was for PSP or PS3. It's technically classified as a digital copy of your purchase.

Full integration would have made better sense in this regard cause now if the Xperia is hacked, there is nothing much Sony can do about it.

Tho being Sony they'll either try to argue they signed a similar EULA as the PS3/PSP so it circumvents the DMCA, or they'll try to argue that Xperia Play is primarily a game console first with phone features as a secondary option.

Wow Sony you really want people to rebuy their games again just to play them on this phone? How do they expect to compete against the iPhone with this type of strategy? At least on the iPhone you can redownload for free any Apps you bought on an iPod Touch, iPad, or other iPhone.

I've bought a few games on PSN and would never buy them again just to play on this phone.

Wow that smart, I wanted to add emulators to this too mostly because I don't like the touchscreen controller. Touchscreen is the worst.

After a bit of thought, I actually kinda like the idea of having a phone that is both rooted and jailbroken...and the SNES-style control pad would be great for emulators. As long as it does not need a PSN account, it could be a great phone. ...And if there is some kind of agreement upon the first startup, I will make the guy a bestbuy accept the agreement :)
