Report: Microsoft Surface to sell for $599

Report: Microsoft Surface to sell for $599
Bloomberg reported earlier today that sources are claiming to have early access to Microsoft's pricing of the Surface tablets.

The sources say the tablets will be Wi-Fi-only to begin with, in an effort to keep costs down.

Thanks to such a move, the lower-end Windows RT-based tablet will sell for $599, likely meaning the "Pro" version will cost $799 or so.

If accurate, Microsoft will have to compete on price with Apple devices that offer 4G LTE connectivity although Apple has admitted that there aren't too many people who care about anything other than Wi-Fi.

Apple admitted nobody cares about Cellular connectivity? Really. This is total bull. I had the 3 iPads, no can do without cellular, it's the only feature that confirms a device as a mobile. Rediculous, just go for a laptop then at least the keyboard is attached and the screen can stand upright on its own, they re gonna sell tables to go with this thing?

Also, not sure what you are talking about that makes the surface so rediculous that you need to buy a laptop instead? It's exactly like an ipad but without having to buy a keyboard or stand if you want one.

the cellular service on the iPad is month by month, it's not a contract. I hope you and the article writers would refrain from these generalizations , when you say no one buys a cellular contract this is grossly inaccurate and you sir don't know what you are talking about. In terms of using this article as a laptop, you can't use it on the couch right? The cover and the tablet are not hinged and that cover is mailable it needs a hard surface to lie flat and enable typing even if it's not entirely soft, it is still not a solid material. You also. Ant prop the tablet on you knees. Awkward is really the word that comes to mind.

Your clearly clueless. No one said there was a contract, I just said the cost of a month. Second, the keyboard doubles as the screen cover and back folds in. You can use an on screen keyboard as well you idiot.

I know exactly what I am talking about. And you are the dimwit if you can't understand what is being said. And yes you mentioned a contract right in the first sentence of your response. You can't just attack people who disagree with you. Bottom dweller.

The cover is attached by a magnet to the side so you can't place it at a particular angle to the screen and expect it to stay there , there are no hinges like a laptop. So therefore you need a table to place the tablet and the cover and type. Also the kickstand will keep it upright if placed on a hard surface, it will be harder to align it on a soft surface or on one's lap for instance. I becomes very difficult to use this as a laptop on the go. This is my opinion , if you don't like it then we can disagree but it doesn't make me a fool. Really it doesn't. Good day to you!

The iPad does not claim to be a laptop replacement like the windows pro does. The windows pro is designed to compete with laptops.

It's a tablet, that happens to have a case that than be used as a real keyboard, and nothing more has been claimed for it. Both the RT and Pro models, point of fact, have significantly better specs than current iPads, beyond screen resolution, so *shrug* whatever. The USB port(s) are a serious plus,as well.

Wow.. All this over a tablet with cellular issues. Really!!?? come on now if you do not have anything nice to say JUST DON'T SAY IT!

I think it's smart for MS to come out with a price similar to Apple to show they are at least attempting to go toe to toe with ipad. If these "reports" are true on price MS better have their act together.

Yeah that price range is too high for me. Could just get one of those little weight laptops instead.

With the track record Microsoft has with portable devices, they should seriously consider losing money the first 6 months or so; selling it for around $399. Nobody wants to be that Guinea Pig...
