Taiwanese teenager dies after playing too much Diablo III
A Taiwanese teenager collapsed and died at an Internet cafe after playing Diablo III for 40 straight hours.

18 year-old Chuang had booked a private room at noon on July 13th, and collapsed on the morning of the 15th, after having not eaten during the entire time he was playing.

Before collapsing, an attendant found Chaung napping on his table. After she woke him, he got up, stood briefly and then fainted.

Chaung passed away after reaching the hospital.

While the cause of death is still unknown, the prolonged hours in a sedentary position, combined with no food, almost certainly led to cardiovascular problems.

Earlier this year, another young adult died in a similar fashion after playing 23 hours straight.

I don't guess he will try that again anytime soon.

What I don't understand is how someone can play a game after two straight hours? I mean I consider 3-4 heavy hardcore gaming. But I don't understand why you couldn't at least take a break for food or to go to the bathroom or something.

Embo22000, i agree :S... and the real sad thing is that this gives a bad image to gamers, it was on some old people's radio station and they were criticizing gamers. Now that really annoys me, now, let me carry on playing games for another 23 hours, excuse me guys... >.>

im with some of the people here who play a lot of games. I work a great job and function outside the realm of the video games. I have all the normal things, but my weekends are spent grinding on a MMO or playing consoles, but i always make sure to eat, sleep, take a break and use the bathroom.

Just sad because its things like this that do give us such a bad rap.

Dumb people die all the time, and well here is another example. I mean how the hell did he not feel the need to urinate, eat, or drink? I think the death is going to be a blood clot that formed from sitting 40+ hours in one position when he got up that was it. Even if he got up every few hours to urinate, or get a drink would have probably saved his life.

I think what bugs me here is no one thought to check on him before that. I mean we talking a private room at a public cafe here, not a hotel. You would think there should be some onus of responsibility towards the owners.

You would think there should be some onus of responsibility towards the owners. This is my main problem with it as well but I disagree with your comment that there is responsibility on the owner's part - in a duty of care sense. If he was under 18 I would agree, but this is an "adult" who is responsible for his own life so if he wants to sit around for 40 hours slowing taking it then by all means go ahead.

However, I'd have thought it would just be common sense to go and check on someone in a private room that you haven't heard from in 24 hours, let alone 40. Not to mention they must have CCTV, and I think he probably passed out some time before the 40 hour mark on which she thought to check and wake him up.

Without meaning to come across stereotypical or offensive, this is probably a very common occurrence (not death, but long periods of playing) in countries like Taiwan, Japan, etc and obviously not everyone who sits around on their arse for this long or takes a nap is going to die.

At the end of the day though, I really don't give a shit.

What the hell... I'm just glad humanity has found another way of dealing with natural selection.

Getting tired of our society allowing everything to digress as apposed to progress.

I.e., lawn darts! If you're dumb enough to stand under one of the old lawn darts (the full on steel, missile jobbies I grew up with as a kid) to watch the damn thing come down - and you caught that thing in the forehead? Eat shit... The company shouldn't have to held accountable. What part of a metal missile did the parent (for one) miss & 2, if the kid's that stupid - time to make another & start over.
