About half of the devices activated were iPhone 5s, meaning sales seem to be pretty decent for Apple, although likely not spectacular.
Altogether, the company activated 9.8 million smartphones in the quarter, a record for them.
Despite a gain in subscribers and the huge activation figure, the carrier was still forced to record a $1.93 billion loss, thanks mainly to Hurricane Sandy and one-time pension adjustments.
Rival AT&T recently noted it had 10 million smartphone activations for the quarter but did not reveal their exact iPhone figures.
Apple's quarterly earnings report, which many have pegged as its most important since at least 2008, will be released tomorrow afternoon.
