CD and DVD ripping for personal use will be legalized in UK starting June
The UK government has confirmed that copyright law has been revised to allow for legalized CD and DVD ripping/copying for personal use.

In addition, the revision will update other fair use provisions, including parody and quotation rights, says TF.

The proposed changes have been in the works for years but will finally be implemented in June.

UK's Intellectual Property Office released a guide for consumers to inform them of the new changes. "Copyright law is being changed to allow you to make personal copies of media you have bought, for private purposes such as format shifting or backup," reads the guide. "The changes will mean that you will be able to copy a book or film you have purchased for one device onto another without infringing copyright."

In addition, the Office says the changes will generate extra revenue for the tech sector(as much as £31 million per year), while making copyright law more reasonable for consumers.

"You will be permitted to make personal copies to any device that you own, or a personal online storage medium, such as a private cloud. However, it will be illegal to give other people access to the copies you have made, including, for example, by allowing a friend to access your personal cloud storage," the guide stresses. Even though it will be impossible to enforce, the government says if you sell the original media you must destroy your backups.

Sadly it is still technically illegal almost everywhere in spite of portable media players, digital media streaming devices, and 4K laptops with no optical drives. I wonder if BluRays are now legal to copy too; there is a certain BluRay decryption app that needs a new country for their servers.

"The Govt. says if you sell the original media you must destroy your backups".

That is what we all do after we sale our stuff. We just burn the clones, and if we desire to want them again: We just buy the same CD's & DVD's again.
As long as we make a minimum wage salary: No body cares to spend money like a rock star.

    Any honest question !?

For the paltry amount you get from selling used media, you spend less just buying the MP3 version than you do by buying the CD, copying it, and selling it. About the only way you might get around it is by buying used media. But really, if you are so tight on cash that you are buying used CDs to copy and resell, then you are probably just using The Pirate Bay or something.

What is the point to be a DJ / VJ (hobby) and play used CD's, DVD's !?
That will be like playing low quality flac's, low quality mp4's or worse.

Personally I try to restrict my purchases to items that I can buy direct from artists. If I enjoy something enough to listen to it then I want the artist to be able to keep making more of what I enjoy...and live a good life too. These days you can generally buy direct from the artist, even if you want a physical version. As for movies, I don't buy them very often; I just wait for NetFlix with the exception of a few directors that never fail to impress. If my $19.95 contributes to another Tarantino movie it is well spent.

This is a move towards sanity but for so many of us this whole copyright thing is such a load.

We pay (and therefore support) 'the industry' by (in the UK) paying our TV license and for millions now also a subscription package (inc HD films).

So we do pay & by downloading we are not getting anything we would otherwise not get.
All downloading does is allow us the convenience of timing (and possibly better quality audio/image) compared to what we have already paid for.

Even the issue of keeping a copy is bogus as most set-top boxes have a record & keep function.

@Mrguss i've known people burn cds for dj'ing or just for parties simply because the cds get totaled ,stepped on ,drinks split on them, used for chopping drugs on,thrown, scratched, snapped or some just disappear. Most the cds don't work by the end of the night but at a few cents a disc it just doesn't matter.

@killerbug i'm not sure the money would go directly to the artist if you brought of them directly, as a lot of it would change hands before you get the media.

I know visa/paypal/etc is going to take a cut, but the vast majority goes to the artist if you buy it off their website or bandcamp or something. I've got no problem with service fees that make it easier for the artist to sell their work...my argument comes when people pay $20 for a CD in a store and the artist gets $0.50 of it.

For Music, https://bandcamp.com/pricing . Amazon and google also offer decent deals for the lazier artist...and for under $150 anyone can setup a website selling their own music, including credit card processing and enough high speed bandwidth to keep up with enough orders to pay for the website in about a second. A lot of the big artists have deals with publishers where by they get a large percentage of the sales price, and they are selling millions of copies without even trying so they don't really care if they are getting screwed. I really wouldn't hold it against someone to pirate music from someone like that since it wouldn't have any effect on them...but if you wanted to be a "nice pirate", you could always buy a T-Shirt (the artists get larger shares on merchandise). Or you could just send a check to Marshall Bruce Mathers III for "Being Awesome" (depending on your bank you might even get his signature on the canceled check).
For Video it is a bit harder. For instance, Amazon may be selling a product as "fulfilled by Amazon"...but their stock may come direct from the studio...and the studio may be owned by the director.

Movies are kinda tricky anyway; with music a publisher basically pays for studio time and pressing...if the artist has a half-decent job they can probably afford those things themselves. With a movie, you are talking about millions of dollars for an "indie" film. Capital is necessary enough to the process that the producer becomes as important as the director, even if the producer does nothing but write a check. Even if you go with the "nice pirate" approach, it gets really tricky as director, producer, and staring actors may all be getting percentages on sales.

The Idea of make pre-mix music:
1.- To not carried "all" the CD's. Take in mind that around 14 to 20 songs are playing each hr. ( How long the party can last 4 to 6 hrs.? )
2.- To keep the high vibe with out losing the bet. (Best selection)
3.- last: Probably to lose the discs.

The hart time to get the physical format on the brick stores, make me jump to Amazon.com long time ago.
Eventually "maybe" in the "near" future: As most of the people keep "buying" downloads; it will be harder for the Audio enthusiast to buy then in Amazon.com too. So "our" last resource will be through the original producer's.

I'm not so much into Movies myself, since most of the times I only see them once.
    I was talking about Video-Music on DVD's, for VJ's [Old-Skool]. witch I get them from Promo-Only.

But, I agree with you about buying "directly" from the artists. It make you a "Good Shopper".
